Nearly two-thirds of Egyptian men admit to having sexually harassed women in the most populous Arab country, and a majority say women themselves are to blame for their maltreatment, a survey showed Thursday.

Several years ago now, I had an e-friend from Egypt. She was a particularly attractive young woman. She was studying to be a nurse. We had the ubiquitous flirty e-friendship for a while and then she just vanished.

A week or two later I sent an email apologising for whatever I had done to offend her. A week or so after this she replied that she had just gotten released from hospital after being sexually assaulted. Seriously assaulted.

Her communication became erratic and confused. Her depression set in and then one day, she vanished, again. I never ever heard from her again. Her old email address remains unanswered.

She said to me that the men where she lived (Cairo) seemed to think that a woman carried a mattress around on her back. Then she was assaulted.

I make no judgement on this. I don’t need to. You can see it for what it is.

Graeme, I am so sorry you lost your friend. I have lost faith in men and dont trust any; i plan to live out my remaining years single only to care for my twins boys and my two older children if they need me but thats it.

Hi Bobette.

I lost (most of) my faith in human beings half a lifetime ago. I have known of so many situations where people have used their power like this to belittle and injure.

Personally, I am happy just taking care of my cats.

Is it off-kilter here if I say that women who have been sexually harassed largely brought it upon themselves? Oooops...

Not at all off kilter. I guess, it is all contextual - wearing a short miniskirt to an annual Hell’s Angel convention isn’t too wise... but the definition of what is actually risqué clothing is very much a value-laden thing, no ?

Here is a relevant story from my other blog:

What’s funny is that women wear only a yard of clothing, then get annoyed by all the ogling and whistling from that other sector of society! LOL

It’s difficult to decipher what’s going on, sometimes, from a guys view.

I mean, I love to see women, I love to look at them. I don’t leer at them. However, women most often seem very uncomfortable with being the center of my gaze when they are so often dressed up to be just so. It is a strange dichotomy - between ”look, look at me” and ”no, please don’t notice me”; stuck, as it were, between biological imperatives.

Women are harassed sexually the world over. It happens in offices, schools, public places, private parties and even on the streets. Some take it lying down and some fight back. Those who fight back unfortunately end up being grievously injured.

@Graeme. I am really sorry for your Egyptian friend Graeme.

Thanks, mate.

It’s a problem which, as you well know, is globally apparent.

At the extreme end of the ”fighting back” spectrum. Some not insignificant number of women are in prison over acts of homicide in violent relationships...
