Women at war
Made Popular Jun 29 2008
What should be the woman’s role in the modern expeditionary British army where front lines are no longer the straight divides of old? Can and should they have full fighting equality with male soldiers? And what is it like to be a woman at war?

Women have proved to be no less competent than men. If they are thrown into combat zones to provide medical help to fighting soldiers it would be great. This would also raise the morales of the fighting soldiers seeing women in high-risk zones doing their bit.

Sarah Bryant is a national hero and she would be remembered for a long, long time for her sacrifice. She is an inspiration to millions of women worldwide who would like to serve in the armed forces. If she can do it, why not others? There is no difference between a man and a woman when it comes to anything but bearing a baby.

Yes.
In fact, being able to bear a baby makes a woman quite significantly more important than men in one way: because it is more often men who cause wars and in this we can see that men are so very good at being destructive - it is women who can create life, who bear the burden and the pain of childbirth. Any human being capable of that is quite likely capable of taking a bullet and surviving to help her squaddies in a ”contact” situation.

The modern woman will find her place even here, she is no lesser a patriot to a man, let her go ahead!

Women warriors have fought great battles in the past. They are in service with many armed forces around the world today. There is no question about their prowess on the war front. But, the points raised by Nirav are quite valid ones.

Still potential of women is under utilized.

Always.
It is amusing to consider that, for all of the banter in this world of the natural right of men to be in control and the predominance of men being a matter of divine attribution - that all new life if first female in the womb and the male and masculine physiology is a potential of the foetus, not an innate state.

I am not very comfortable with the idea that women fight in forward combat positions because of the apparent risks involved. Women would be treated even worse if captured. For example can you imagine a situation when a female soldier is captured by the Taliban or some mercenaries in Congo? They would be raped and brutalised. Are they mentally prepared for such eventualities?

Let there be no effort at preparing them mentally for such roles.

In Australia, we have female combat pilots, I believe. The issue of female ”squaddies” on the front line is contentious for precisely the reasons you outline.
The problem is, women are raped and brutalised all the time and all over society. War is very specific, yes, and extreme, yes, but I have a mental image of someone trying to sexually assault a woman with an assault rifle in her hands.
Sarah Bryant was a combat medic. At the end of the day, any person prepared to put their ass on the line to patch up their colleagues and quite probably while under fire - they are not defined by the sex or gender. Courage is transcendent.
