Maybe, that’s precisely the reason for the pastoral visit! :)

I was actually cornered by 5 or 6 starry-eyed French pilgrims for this WYD event today here in Canberra. There was something loud, colourful and Christian going on that I tried to sneak around but on the way back to the bus station I was cornered and lectured affably and with a dapper French accent on how Jesus loves me and how it was God’s will that these people would talk to me on this day. I will wear my running shoes next time...

Hahaha! I’m giddy with your comment. It would be mighty courteous if you accepted any reading materials that they handed.

What made me laugh was this part:

”There was something loud, colourful and Christian going on...”

I can’t imagine what you meant by ’Christian’ there. :):)

”Christian”... well... imagine a large town square type area in a CBD of this town with maybe two hundred people waving colourful flags and dancing around in circles holding hands, deliriously engaged in rapture with the experience of oneness with each other’s oneness with, well, each other. I actually seriously thought it was Hare Krishna event when I first heard it and saw the spectacle. There were many onlookers and yes, I was given a little two-sided thing...

I guess when I say ”Christian” I mean common-garden delirium deus, to perhaps coin a phrase... but I found myself trying not to giggle when this guy told me how much Jesus and God loved me - not because I disavow their faith or their religious devotion to a Divinity (as I do not disavow any genuine faith)... but it was just a comical situation - to be unwittingly and unwillingly cornered by these pilgrims - a religious ”mugging”, if you will...

Methinks that they would best serve the needs of a Good and Just God by giving their plane fares to the local charities in France or Médecins Sans Frontières or someone, somewhere who is actually ministering to the poor and not to what could potentially be interpreted as a selfish hedonism disguised as self-righteous religiosity.

Pilgrims, they were. Successful in converting me from my loosely Zen Buddhist tendencies, they were not.
