Well, if you are really interested in Indian culture and social conditions, I guess you could go for some Indian authors. One very highly recommendable book would be ”Coolie” by Mulk Raj Anand. Another one is ”The God of Small Things” by Arundhati Roy. My personal favorite remains however ”The Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai. If you want to know something about the feminist issues, I would suggest ”Nine O Nine” by Nandita Puri. I guess you might have heard about Tasleema Nasreen. Her books are also good I have heard. Though I haven’t personally read them. I would really suggest you to read ”Coolie”. It is written in the colonial period and it would take you on a panoramic ride which is both emotional and breathtaking.

India has been the mystic orient for the West for ages and it’s no wonder Graeme that you have also fallen for it! With such a traditional heritage any country can be the focus of interest and inspiration. Lokking at Mayuri’s rich suggestions i think that will be more than enough to enrich and satiate your interest but one single suggestion on my part would be a ”Passage to India”. Have a look at it!!

Graeme, don’t forget to add ’The Discovery Of India” to your kitty. Its the real eye opener to the West and would really burgeon your interest in Indian Culture. I admire curiosity and inquisitiveness for our way of life.
